[Behind Story] The meaning behind 'CHOEAEDOL' and how to pronounce it properly.

 

Hello dear CHOEAEDOL users.

 

Recently we did a major update on our App and with that, we changed our name.

Before, it was 'K-pop Star', but now it is 'CHOEAEDOL'.

 

Call us now as CHOEAEDOL and we'll be super glad to hear that. 💗

We thought some of you who have been using this app or new to this app might be curious about this change!

 

So today, we brought a post to let you know of the meaning of 'CHOEAEDOL' and its proper pronunciation for some foreign users like you! 

 

1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

As some of you have already noticed, CHOEAEDOL is actually a Korean Word. In fact, 'CHOEAEDOL' is a write-down version of '최애돌'.

As you can notice from the image, 최애(CHOE AE) stands for 'favorite' or 🎉'ultimate bias'🎁 kinda meaning in Korean, and then 돌(DOL) as of Idol's abbreviation(often used in Korean to make compound words to describe idol's feature within one word.)

 

So combined together, CHOEAEDOL stands for 'My Favorite Idol'. 

 

2. WHY THE SUDDEN CHANGE?

 

The name '최애돌(CHOEAEDOL)' has been used in the Korean version of our app since the start in 2015, but due to the hardship on pronunciation and conveying the proper meaning, we used the name 'K-pop star' instead.

However, now,  as of 2019, thanks to the expansion of loving global users, we decided to change the name just like the Korean one and convey our original purpose and core value of the app by the naming. 

 

3. HOW DO I PRONOUNCE IT?

As you see the blanks between the words, you divide the syllables by 'CHOE', 'AE', and 'DOL'. 

 

I believe you'd probably know how to pronounce 'AE' and 'DOL' part. 'AE' pronounces just as same as phonetic alphabet [æ]. 'DOL' is just [d(ə)l] as that of an English word, 'idol'. 

 

The tricky part would be to pronounce 'CHOE'. '최', the original Korean word for 'CHOE', which is often anglicized as 'Choi' in some Koreans' last name, actually is made of a diphthong that has 2 vowel sounds. It's a bit tricky, but pronouncing it as [Cheh] or [CHAE] would make a similar enough sound. 

 

To sum up, CHOEAEDOL is pronounced like this.
